Springs
DeLorme Northern California
p.115 A-6.
Hot springs near the present entrance to
Mission Peak Regional
Preserve at the end of Stanford Ave in
Fremont were used by Native Americans. The
Californian settlers came for bathing, laundry, and to hold an annual rodeo
nearby. The area was included in Rancho
Agua Caliente, originally granted to Antonio Suñol, but later
released and in 1839 granted to Fulgencio Higuera. Clemente Columbet bought
the hot springs area in 1850 and built a resort that became a very fashionable
spa and health resort. After the buildings were badly damaged in the 1868
earthquake, Governor Leland Stanford had an estate here, with orchards and
vineyards. In 1956, the town of Warm Springs joined with
Mission San José,
Centerville,
Irvington, and
Niles to form the city of Fremont.

Waterfront Road
Waterfront Road was once one of the better birding roads in Contra Costa County. Unfortunately, the navy has recently closed the road to through traffic. The good news is that you can still reach some of the area. From I-680 exit at Marina Vista and go east past McNabney Marsh. Just after crossing over Pacheco Slough you will reach a guard shack.
Tell the guard you want to birdwatch and they will give you a permit. Drive on until you reach the marsh. You can walk the road or walk the slough to the north that borders the refinery.
