This artificial island (just a few feet above high tide level) in
San Francisco Bay was created as landfill
on mudflats north of Yerba Buena Island
to make a site for the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition. The
fair site could be reached by ferry, airplane, or automobile (via the recently
completed Bay Bridge). After the exposition,
the island was taken over by the US Navy as a military base. The base was
closed in the early 1990s, and conversion to civilian use is underway, with
the city of San Francisco planning the future uses of the site (it is located
in San Francisco County). Currently, public access to Treasure Island is
very limited.

Trestle
Glen Creek
Flows from region near Tyson Lake in
Piedmont down the valley now occupied by Trestle
Glen Rd, mostly now underground in storm drainage pipes. Once entered
Wildwood Creek near present intersection
of Trestle Glen Rd & Lakeshore Ave in
Oakland. Early settlers called this stream Indian
Gulch because a native village was located in the valley. The name was changed
in 1893 after a streetcar trestle was put across the valley, and the area
was developed by the streetcar company as a picnic ground with dance pavillion
and refreshment stands. There was an unsuccessful attempt around 1915 to
have Oakland buy the area for a city park. Within the next decade, developers
cleared the valley and subdivided it, in the process removing the last stand
of Oakland's original oak trees.
