Located south of Pleasanton and

San Antonio Creek not far above where it
flows into Alameda Creek. Built in 1964
by the San Francisco Water Department. Serves as storage for water from the
Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct and local wells and watersheds. Capacity 50,500 acre-feet.
Surface elevation about 450 ft. The official name of the dam is James H Turner
Dam. Access by Indian Creek Rd from Calaveras Rd (the reservoir is not open
to the public).
San Francisco Public
Utilities Commission, San Francisco Water Department.
San Antonio
Slough
A marshy estuary formed where Indian Gulch
(later Trestle Glen Creek),
Wildwood Creek,
Pleasant Valley Creek, and
Glen Echo Creek came together to empty
into San Antonio Estuary (now known as
the Oakland Estuary or the
Oakland Inner Harbor). This slough
formed a significant barrier between the town of
Oakland and other settlements to the east. The
county arranged to have a bridge built across the mouth of the slough, but
then proved unable to come up with the money to pay for the finished bridge.
A lawyer named Horace W. Carpentier paid the bill in return for permission
to collect tolls on the bridge. Dr Samuel Merritt, a dentist who had purchased
large amounts of real estate around the slough, began work toward turning
the slough into an attractive lake. In 1869, after Merritt had been elected
mayor of Oakland, the Twelfth Street Dam was completed, along with an improved
bridge. In later years, much of the slough was filled and covered with buildings.

Named for August L Schilling, who was a member of the family that
made its fortune in the spice trade. August owned the Dumbarton Land Company
and Arden Salt Company. In 1919 he harvested his first salt in a small works
at Dumbarton Point. In 1923 he constructed
Plant Number 1 northeast of the present Marshlands Rd along Jarvis Rd, and
in 1926 the huge Plant Number 2 south of Central Ave in Newark. He bought
huge tracts of wetlands and gradually expanded his salt operations around
the south end of San Francisco Bay. In 1936
he merged his company with the Leslie California Company (that owned a salt
operation near Redwood City), creating the Leslie Salt Company, which became
the largest landowner in the Bay Area. Today Cargill Salt holds much of that
land and continues to produce salt in the South Bay. See

A complex volcanic center that was the source, 10 million years ago, of most
of the lavas that underlie the ridges from
Inspiration Point to
Moraga (the Berkeley Hills have subsequently
been uplifted and folded by movement on the Hayward and Moraga fault
systems). Round Top is the lava-filled
cauldron of the largest volcano, exposed by erosion of surrounding softer
sedimentary rocks.
An unstaffed visitor center at the park entrance provides displays illustrating
the geology; brochures are provided for a self-guided volcanic tour.
Named in honor of Robert Sibley, director and president of the East
Bay Regional Park District from 1948 until his death in 1958, and as head
of the UC Berkeley Alumni Association one of the people active in the original
campaign to create EBRPD. This was one of the three original parks
of EBRPD dedicated in 1936 (originally called Roundtop Regional Park); it
was expanded in 1977 by the addition of an old quarry site to the north,

The heart of this park is the 3,383-acre ranch of Willis Brinker, who died
fighting a fire here in 1959. He in turn had bought the Welch, Geary, and
Leyden ranches and additional railroad land. The area was first settled in
the 1860s and was ranch land until it became a regional park. It was also
a popular area for summer camping along Alameda
Creek, with women and children often staying for the summer while husbands
visited on weekends.
