Historic Site
2647 Arroyo Rd, Livermore CA 94550. Tel: (925) 373-5708.
Summer home of Christopher Augustine Buckley Sr, the "Blind Boss" of San
Francisco politics. A 100-acre country vineyard with house (built 1885-91),
cottage house, and tank house. Buckley used this as a summer home until 1920.
In 1931, it was purchased by the Catholic order the Redemptorists (officially
the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer), renamed Villa San Clemente (in
honor of one of the order's founders, Sant Clement Hofbauer) and used as
a religious retreat until 1965. In 1968, a developer purchased the property,
built homes on two-thirds of the land, and gave the rest to the city of Livermore
to be preserved as a historic site. The Park District took over administration
of the site, restoring the main house and tank house in 1978 and the cottage
house in 1986. Free public tours are lead by costumed docents on the second
Sunday of each month. At other times, the house and grounds can be rented
for weddings.

When European ships sailed into San Francisco Bay in the early nineteenth
century, their captains navigated around the treacherous submerged rocks
and shallows of the Bay by sighting on tall redwood trees atop the East Bay
Hills. Between 1840 and 1860, this redwood forest was logged to provide lumber
for the new towns of the Bay Area. (When the southern part of
Contra Costa County was split off
to form Alameda County in 1853, the valuable
redwood forest was split evenly between the two counties.) The second-growth
trees today reach heights of up to 150 feet.
