An extensive landfill (garbage dump) southeast of Oakland International Airport,
now being reclaimed as parkland. There have been serious leakage problems,
with disputes between the East Bay Regional Park District and the former
owner of the landfill about who is responsible for the cleanup, so little
development has yet been done here. There is a self-guided nature loop trail
(with discussion of recycling and garbage treatment as well as wildlife),
and also a part of the Bay Trail around the
edge of the landfill. Picnic facilities are available for reservation. The
name refers to the extensive oyster industry that once flourished along
San Francisco Bay from
Alameda south to
Hayward. Landfill, pollution, and creation of
salt ponds eliminated the oyster beds.
