McNabney_Marsh
McNabney Marsh and the Mt. View Sanitary District are adjacent to I-680 just before the Benicia Bridge. Note that most know the marsh by the name Shell but it has been renamed after Al McNabney who worked passionately for over 20 years to protect places such as this marsh before passing away on May 1, 1998. You would do well to occasionally stop and think of Al and others like him whenever you are birding in a protected area.
To reach the sanitary district and the south end of McNabney Marsh exit I-680 in Martinez at Arthur Rd. Take the ramp over the freeway and turn right onto Arthur. Go under the freeway and follow the road as it bears left. Go to the end and turn left through the gate. Note that the gate is only open until 4 pm and only on weekdays.
To reach the north end of the marsh backtrack to I-680 and go north. Exit at Marina Vista and go east. Turn right again on Waterbird Way and pull off up the hill for a good view of the marsh. The sun is brutal here by noon so get here in the morning.

José

In 1795, a site for a new mission was recommended at the northwest base of
what is now called Mission Peak, overlooking
extensive farmable lands with Alameda Creek
providing a year-round water supply, and close to the route inland to the
Central Valley through what is now
Livermore. Mission San José was founded
in June 1797, dedicated to the work of Christianizing the Native Americans.
Extensive farmlands and herds of cattle were tended by Indian converts. Many
of those who tried to run away were killed, and many of the Indians died
of European diseases. The mission was a center for the social life of the
East Bay ranchos, a wayside station for travelers, and an important trading
post. Most sources list the full name of the mission as Mission San José
de Guadalupe, but this name apparently came only from a sign erected on the
roof of the mission in the early 1900s. The official name used at the founding
was La Misión del Gloriosisimo Patriarch San José, but it was
always known simply as Mission San José. (The only connection between
the mission and the pueblo of San José 13 miles to the south is that
both were dedicated to Saint Joseph.) After Mexico became independent from
Spain in 1834, the missions were secularized. Half of the mission property
was supposed to go to the Indians and the other half to be handled by secular
administrators. In fact, most of the lands soon passed into private non-Indian
hands. Only a few scattered tiny rancherias remained in Indian hands. Most
of the Mission San José lands were acquired by Elias Lyman Beard,
whose homestead at the mission site is now a Dominican convent. The mission
buildings were largely destroyed in the earthquake of 1868. The town of Mission
San José joined with Centerville,
Irvington, Niles,
and Warm Springs in 1956 to form the city
of Fremont.

Temple (Oakland)
Thomas 1997 p.650 F-3.
Officially known as the Oakland California Temple of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. Part of a complex known as
Temple Hill, located on Lincoln Ave not
far southwest of Hwy 13. The temple (lighted at night) is a prominent landmark
in the Oakland Hills. The Mormons were
the second Christian church (after the Catholics) to establish a regular
pattern of services in Alameda County. Their 1850 building in
Centerville (now part of
Fremont) was later shared with Presbyterians
and Methodists. Massive grading of the hillside to prepare a site for the
Temple began in 1955; the Temple was dedicated in 1964.
