Gymnasium
Thomas Contra Costa p.68

H-2.
Former basketball facility at University of
California - Berkeley. In 1878, Oakland financier A. K. P. Harmon donated
$15,000 for a combined auditorium/gymnasium building at UC. Opened in January
1879, the octagonal wooden building was the largest auditorium on the campus
for many years, and it was extensively remodeled several times. In 1933,
a new Men's Gymnasium was built off Bancroft Way near Dana St, and in 1959
it was renamed Harmon Gymnasium. Although a state-of-the-art facility at
its opening, Harmon by the 1980s was regarded as a tiny and poorly equipped
college basketball facility, though its close seating and aggressive fans
made it a significant asset to Cal's basketball teams. In 1998, Harmon was
torn down and replaced by the new Haas Pavilion. For more detailed history,

Hayward's
Landing
Thomas 1997 p.711 A-4 (as
"Hayward Landing").
William Hayward from Massachusetts was one of the first Americans
to settle on Rancho San Lorenzo.
He arrived in 1851, was informed by Guillermo Castro that he was trespassing,
and then worked out an agreement by which he remained and became good friends
with Castro. In 1852 he built a hotel north of the present intersection of
A St & Mission Blvd, and a boat landing at the foot of the present W
Winton Ave for ferrying passengers and goods to and from San Francisco.

Head-Royce
School
Thomas 1997 p.650 E-3.
Private coeducational college-preparatory K-12 school in
Oakland. The Anna Head School was founded in
1887 by the ninth woman to graduate from the
University of California and was located
at 2538 Channing Way, just south of the UC Berkeley campus. (Anna Head created
the school with money given to her by her mother Eliza Head, from the proceeds
of selling the school she had founded in Oakland in the 1860s to teach young
ladies the finer points of English and French.) The Anna Head School became
a very prestigious college-preparatory institution for women, taking both
boarding and day students. When Anna Head retired in 1909, she sold the school
to a teacher, Mary E. Wilson. In 1938, it was sold to Mr. & Mrs. T. R.
Hyde, and in 1950 to Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Dewey. In 1955, the University
of California acquired the campus by eminent domain for its own programs.
Because the Deweys could not afford to relocate, a new corporation was created
to run the school, and a new location was found in the Oakland Hills. The
move was completed in 1964, with the school becoming only a day school. In
1971, the corporation created a companion school for boys, the Royce School
(named for Anna Head's brother-in-law, Josiah Royce, Harvard professor and
philosopher). In the fall of 1979, the schools were combined to form a
coeducational K-12 institution, divided into the Lower School (K-5), the
Middle School (6-8), and the Upper School (9-12).

Holy Names
College
Thomas 1997 p.650 G-4 (as
"College of the Holy Names").
An independent, coeducational, Catholic college with a strong liberal-arts
undergraduate program, significant graduate and professional programs, and
a thriving college for adult learners. Founded as the Convent of Our Lady
of the Sacred Heart on the western shore of Lake Merritt in 1868 by six Sisters
of the Holy Names (a teaching order founded to provide education to the poor)
who came to California from Montreal. By 1880 the school was empowered by
California to grant higher degrees. Its primary purpose at that time was
to train teachers for Catholic schools, and only Sisters of the order were
given college-level education. In 1908, the name was changed to Convent and
College of the Holy Names, and in 1916 secular students were admitted for
the first time. In 1917 the Holy Names Junior College was inaugurated; the
senior college officially opened in 1925, with the first B.A. awarded to
a secular student in 1926. In 1955, the Graduate Division was established,
and men were formally admitted for the first time. In 1957, the college moved
to its present location in the Oakland Hills (the Kaiser Center was then
built on its former grounds, and some plantings from the Convent garden still
survive in the public garden on top of the Kaiser Center parking garage).
In 1971, the entire college officially became coed and the name was formally
changed to Holy Names College.

On the east side of the Berkeley Hills
between Oakland and
Orinda, this preserve contains a relic plant
association found only in certain areas along California's coast where ideal
soil and climatic conditions exist. The plants originated in the distant
past along the southern coast of California when the climate was more moist
and tempered by the cool coastal fog. Today, similar vegetation is
found on the islands off the Santa Barbara coast and in isolated pockets
on the mainland coast from Point Conception to Montara Mountain. There
is a self-guiding nature trail (Huckleberry
Path).
