Hugh Dimond purchased this land in 1867. After making a fortune in
the mercantile and liquor trades during the Gold Rush, he retired to the
valley in 1877, building a home in what is now lower
Dimond Park (this house burned in 1913). He died
in 1896. The same year, his son Dennis Dimond moved the adobe bricks from
the original Luis Peralta home to the canyon, using them to build a small
cottage. The property was sold to the city of Oakland in 1917. For years,
the adobe cottage was used as a Boy Scout headquarters.

is a major area on the Pacific Flyway for mitratory waterfowl and shorebirds,
as well as providing habitat for endangered California Clapper Rail, California

Dumbarton
Bridge
DeLorme Northern California
p.105 D-5.
The original automobile bridge between Dumbarton
Point in Fremont and Ravenswood Point in
Menlo Park was opened in January 1927. It was the first vehicle bridge crossing
San Francisco Bay (only 1.2 miles over water at this point). It was a low-level
bridge with a lift span. In December 1984 it was replaced by a new high-level
bridge carrying three lanes of traffic in each direction. The bridge is located
within the
Don Edwards
San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. A walkway above the toll
booths connects the refuge with
Coyote Hills Regional Park
to the north via hiking trails. There is also a railroad bridge south of
the highway bridge, but it went out of use in 1982. There is talk of restoring
rail service across the bridge as part of a new commuter rail service.
Dumbarton
Point
DeLorme Northern California
p.115 A-5.
Point in Fremont on the eastern shoreline of
southern San Francisco Bay, where
the shoreline turns eastward toward Mowry
Slough. With Ravenswood Point on the western shoreline, Dumbarton Point
forms the narrowest spot in the bay. The first
Dumbarton Bridge across the bay here was
built in 1927. A Scots investor, J Barr Robertson, obtained ownership of
a townsite near Jarvis Landing. He named
the point after Dumbarton Point in Scotland (where the River Clyde
enters the North Sea), and called the townsite
Newark after the castle on Scotland's Dumbarton
Point. In 1875 work was begun on a railroad from Dumbarton Point through
the townsite, but the project never got past initial grading. The next year
the project was bought out (see Newark) and became
part of the South Pacific Coast Railroad, a narrow gauge railroad from Dumbarton
Point to Santa Cruz (later extended north to
Alameda and ferry connections to San Francisco).

Dunsmuir House
& Gardens
Alexander Dunsmuir came to the Bay Area in 1878 to oversee the family
business here (his father was a wealthy coal baron in British Columbia).
He bought a large estate in the East Bay Hills, with rolling hills, farms,
and fruit orchards. He built an elegant mansion in 1899 as a wedding gift
for his fiancee Josephine, but Alexander died in New York on their honeymoon
and Josephine lived alone in the new house until she died in 1901. The estate
was purchased in 1906 as a summer home by I W Hellman Jr, a Wells
Fargo Bank executive. The Hellmans called it Oakvale Park. The mansion was
remodeled and enlarged in 1913. Mr Hellman died in 1920, but Mrs Hellman
lived there until the late 1950s. In the early 1960s,
Oakland purchased the estate, intending to create
a conference center. When these plans did not work out, a nonprofit organization
was created to preserve and restore the estate, which was owned by the city
and jointly operated by the city and the nonprofit group. In June 1989, the
nonprofit Dunsmuir House and Gardens Inc was given full responsibility for
operating the 50-acre estate as an educational, historical, cultural, and
horticultural resource.

D.U.S.T.
Marsh
Marsh in Coyote Hills Regional
Park that purifies stormdrain runoff. The acronym stands for Demonstration
Urban Stormwater Treatment. The marsh was constructed in the early 1980s
by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) as a model to study the
effectiveness of using wetlands to remove pollutants from urban runoff before
allowing it to flow into the Bay. Today the marsh is maintained by the Alameda
County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, and it remains one
of the few examples of successful stormwater treatment projects in the world.
